My diapers have arrived. Now what?
What is "prepping" and why is it crucial for your cloth diapers’ performance? Fear not, because we’re here to demystify the process and ensure your Tush Diapers work their best.
What is Prepping?
Prepping is the initial process of washing your new cloth diapers before their first use. But it’s not just about cleanliness; prepping is essential for enhancing the natural absorbency of the diapers. Natural fibers, like the certified organic cotton we use in Tush Diapers, have natural oils that can inhibit absorbency. Through prepping, we wash away these oils, allowing the fibers to fluff up and maximize their thirst-quenching capabilities.
Why Prepping Matters
Imagine you’re ready to embark on your cloth diapering journey, you’ve got your stash set up, and then, during the first use, you find the diapers aren’t as absorbent as expected. This scenario is precisely what prepping helps to prevent. By adequately prepping your diapers, you’re setting the stage for a leak-free, comfortable experience for your baby from day one. Plus, it’s a crucial step in ensuring you’re getting the most out of your sustainable investment.
Discovering the Benefits for Your Family
Switching to cloth diapers is a choice that impacts not only your baby but your entire family and the environment. Using the Starter Set, you'll quickly grasp the practical aspects of cloth diapering, including the washing routine, the comfort and fit for your baby, and the overall ease of use. More importantly, you'll start to see the tangible benefits:
- Environmental Impact: Cloth diapers significantly reduce waste, contributing to a healthier planet for future generations.
- Cost Savings: Although the initial investment is higher, cloth diapers can be reused for multiple years and even for more than one child, offering substantial long-term savings.
- Health and Comfort: Cloth diapers are free from the chemicals and fragrances found in disposables, reducing the risk of diaper rash and allergies.
How to Prep Your Tush Diapers
For Covers:
- Wash Once: Your diaper covers need to be washed once before use. These can be washed at a normal hot cycle, between 40°C to 60°C (100°F to 150°F). Since they’re primarily used to provide a waterproof outer layer, one wash is sufficient to remove any residues from the manufacturing process and prepare them for use.
For Inners:
- Wash Three Times: The absorbent part of your diapering system, our inners, require a bit more attention. Wash them three times on a normal hot cycle within the same temperature range. This repetitive process is key to puffing up the cotton fibers, ensuring they reach their full absorbency potential.
General Tips:
- You can wash your diapers with other laundry or on their own. It’s completely up to you, as the primary goal here is to get those fibers prepped.
- Don’t use fabric softener or dryer sheets, as these can coat the fibers and reduce absorbency. A small amount of cloth-diaper-safe detergent is all you need.
- Sun drying your diapers can help with any stubborn stains and is a great way to naturally sanitize them, thanks to UV rays. However, they can also be tumble dried on low for convenience.
Post-Prepping: What to Expect
After you’ve completed the prepping process, your diapers are ready to go! You’ll notice that with each wash, your diapers will become even more absorbent, reaching their peak performance after several uses. This increase in absorbency over time is a natural characteristic of the organic cotton we use, showcasing the material's durability and your choice’s sustainability.
